How to choose a Generator

When choosing the right portable generator, there are three key factors to consider:
  • Intended Use: Determine how you plan to use the generator, whether for home backup power, extended continuous operation, or occasional temporary use.
  • Voltage Requirements: Identify whether you require a single-phase or three-phase generator based on the equipment you intend to power.
  • Power Output: Calculate the total power required for the appliances and equipment you want to operate. Choosing a generator with sufficient capacity ensures reliable and efficient performance.

How to start a generator

Portable Generator Safety & First Start Instructions
Safety Precautions
Always follow these safety precautions when operating a portable generator:
  • Never operate a generator inside a home, garage, basement, or any enclosed or partially enclosed space. Generators produce carbon monoxide, a colourless and odourless gas that can be fatal.
  • Always operate the generator outdoors in a well-ventilated area, away from doors, windows, and air vents.
  • Keep the generator on a stable, level surface and away from flammable materials.
  • Never refuel the generator while the engine is running or still hot. Allow it to cool before adding fuel.
Before First Start-Up
Before starting your generator for the first time, carefully read the Instruction and Maintenance Manual. Then complete the following steps:
  1. Fill the engine with the recommended engine oil to the correct level.
  2. Fill the fuel tank with the specified type of fuel as indicated in the manual.
  3. Move the choke lever to the Choke position (for a cold start).
  4. Start the generator:
    • Recoil start models: Pull the recoil starter handle firmly until the engine starts.
    • Electric start models: Connect the battery before attempting to start the generator. Once connected, turn the ignition key or press the start button to start the engine.
  5. After the engine has started and warmed up, gradually return the choke lever to the Run position.
Always refer to the Instruction and Maintenance Manual for model-specific operating and maintenance procedures.

What size of Generator do i need

Choosing the Right Generator Size
The size of a generator is directly related to the amount of power it can supply. To determine the correct generator size, calculate the total wattage of all the lights, appliances, tools, and other equipment you plan to operate at the same time.
It is essential to know both the starting (surge) wattage and the running (continuous) wattage of each device, as many electrical appliances require additional power when they first start up. Accurately calculating these values will help ensure you select a generator with sufficient capacity to meet your power needs.
You can usually find the starting and running wattage specifications on the equipment's identification plate, product label, or in the owner's manual.

How to shutdown Generator

Generator Shutdown Procedure
To safely shut down your generator, first switch off and disconnect all connected tools and appliances. Allow the generator to run without any load for a few minutes so the engine can cool down.
Next, stop the generator by moving the Start/On/Off switch to the OFF position. Finally, close the fuel valve to prevent fuel from flowing to the engine.
